The Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment (MLJE) has launched the Work Abroad Programme. This initiative is in collaboration with the Youth Employment Agency (YEA).
The inauguration took place at the MLJE conference room. Representatives from key state institutions and international organizations attended. They will serve on two committees overseeing the programme.
Madam Gloria Bortele Noi welcomed participants and thanked them for their support. Mr. Malik Basintale, CEO of YEA, provided an overview of the initiative. He emphasized that it aims to create international job opportunities for skilled Ghanaian youth.
Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, Minister for Labour, reiterated the government's commitment to reducing youth unemployment. He highlighted strategic international partnerships as essential to this effort. The Work Abroad Programme will help Ghanaian youth find temporary, seasonal, contract, and permanent jobs abroad.
Dr. Pelpuo outlined several objectives for the programme. These include promoting safe migration and enhancing youth employability. The programme also aims to address unemployment and support national economic growth.
He stressed that it should benefit both youth and international labour markets. During his speech, he announced the cancellation of domestic worker migration. This decision aims to protect vulnerable groups from exploitation.
It also aligns Ghana’s labour migration strategy with international standards. The Minister discussed the newly formed committees' roles in implementing the initiative. The YEA will serve as the programme's secretariat and play a key operational role.
In closing, Dr. Pelpuo thanked committee members for their willingness to serve. He wished them success in their future work. The Work Abroad Programme is a major government effort to tackle youth unemployment through global partnerships.
