President John Dramani Mahama has criticized the previous NPP administration. He called their upgrade of the Sunyani Regional Hospital "deceptive." Mahama said it lacked legal and infrastructural support.
During his Thank-You Tour in the Bono Region, he spoke on May 30. He stated that the NPP's designation of the hospital as a teaching facility was unsupported by law. “We have corrected that,” he added.
Mahama mentioned that the Council of State approved the board. His administration is working with the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR). They aim to train health professionals for Bono, Bono East, Ahafo regions, and beyond.
He also announced plans to establish a medical school at UENR. Mahama noted that underinvestment had caused years of stagnation at the university. “The new NDC administration is going to change that,” he said.
One step taken is uncaping the GETFund. This will free up resources for critical infrastructure projects in education. According to Mahama, GETFund has conducted an audit at UENR. Construction of new facilities for a medical school will begin soon.
