NAGRAT vows teachers will arm themselves over rising student violence

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has issued a warning to the Ghana Education Service (GES). They demand urgent action to stop violence against teachers in schools.

NAGRAT President Angel Carbonu announced plans starting June 1, 2025. If GES does not take decisive measures, NAGRAT will act.

Carbonu expressed concern for teacher safety. He said, “If someone can harm me, I should be able to come armed.” This reflects growing anxiety among teachers about their safety.

He emphasized that teachers may need to protect themselves. “We will have to make sure that no student kills us,” he stated.

His comments follow recent incidents where teachers were attacked or threatened by students. This has sparked national debate about discipline and respect in schools.

NAGRAT criticized the GES and government for their inadequate response. The Association demands immediate action to ensure teacher safety nationwide. They warn that continued inaction could harm the education sector.

Carbonu spoke during an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News on May 22.
