Open Letter to the Minister of Tourism

Plastic waste Plastic waste

Dear Honorable Abla Dzifa Gomashie (and possibly Honorable Sam George),

Ghana is known for its warm hospitality, relatively high level of security, and an abundance of beautiful places to visit.

Last weekend, I took the opportunity to explore one of the beaches near Accra. After a long drive — made even longer by the poor road conditions — I finally arrived at Prampram. Unfortunately, the day was not ideal for a beach outing, but what truly broke my heart was the condition of the shoreline.

The plastic waste is everywhere — in tons — suffocating the beaches and even the shallow waters: plastic bags, bottles, slippers, crates, nets, and many other objects.

I have attached some images to highlight my concerns. While it is undeniable that galamsey (illegal mining) is a national disaster, I fear it is not the only one we face.

The images speak for themselves. Urgent action is needed to restore our beaches and protect the future for the next generation. We owe it to our children to safeguard our natural treasures.

Respectfully,
A Concerned Citizen
