The Parliamentary Select Committee on Human Rights met with Amnesty International Ghana. They discussed collaboration and received updates on human rights legislation.
Genevieve Partington, the Country Manager, led the Amnesty team. They provided a briefing on their activities and advocacy efforts. These initiatives aim to promote and protect human rights in various sectors.
The meeting focused on a human rights approach to drug use. They also addressed the rights of vulnerable populations, especially the poor.
The committee received an update on the Witchcraft Bill. Concerns were raised about accessing crucial information from the police.
Another important topic was the Community Sentencing Bill. This bill was developed with the Ministry of Interior but is not yet before Parliament.
Mr. Ernest Yaw Anim, Chairman of the Committee, praised Amnesty International Ghana's commitment to human rights advocacy. He expressed the committee's willingness to collaborate with Amnesty and other civil society organizations for public education and implementation of human rights initiatives.
