Preacher sentenced to five years for vandalizing vehicles at Parliament House

An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced 33-year-old preacher Christopher Kofi Okyere Sorkpa to five years in prison. He was convicted for vandalizing vehicles parked at Parliament House.

Sorkpa pleaded guilty to six counts of conspiracy and unlawful damage. Judge Samuel Bright Asiedu presided over the case. His accomplice, 41-year-old Wisdom Ahli, faces similar charges. Ahli has been remanded in police custody while his charges are amended.

Ahli's case is adjourned until January 9, 2025. The prosecution was led by Superintendent Augustine Yirenkyi. They provided details about the incident involving Sorkpa and Ahli.

On December 18, 2024, around 11:00 a.m., both men allegedly entered the car park at Parliament House. Sorkpa had a handbag that concealed an earth chisel. He used this tool to shatter the windscreens of five vehicles.

These vehicles belonged to Members of Parliament and Parliamentary Service staff. Ahli reportedly cheered on Sorkpa during the vandalism. Both men were caught at the scene and confessed their crime.

Their admissions were made in front of an independent witness. During the hearing, Superintendent Yirenkyi stated that investigations were complete before arraignment.

While Sorkpa admitted guilt, Ahli's charges needed amendments, leading to an adjournment for his case. Judge Asiedu emphasized the seriousness of targeting state property during sentencing.

Ahli remains in police custody as his case awaits a hearing next year.
