President Mahama declares July 1 as National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving

President John Dramani Mahama has designated July 1 as Ghana’s National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving. This day was previously celebrated as Republic Day.

The announcement occurred during a ceremony at the Presidency on April 25, 2025. A 34-member planning committee was inaugurated to oversee preparations for this inaugural observance.

In his speech, President Mahama emphasized unity and spiritual reflection for national development. He noted Ghana's religious diversity as a strength. He said, "One of Ghana’s greatest blessings is the harmony with which we practice our diverse faiths."

He added that Christians, Muslims, and traditionalists worship differently but work together as one people. This unity is a national treasure that should not be taken for granted.

The President stated that the National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving fulfills a promise from his 2024 campaign. He urged all Ghanaians, both at home and abroad, to participate in this observance. He encouraged citizens to seek divine guidance for the nation's progress.

Elvis Afriyie Ankrah is the chairman of the planning committee. He expressed gratitude for the trust placed in their team. He assured everyone of their commitment to organizing an inclusive event. "We will consult broadly," he said, "and bring everybody on board from every region, every faith, every background."
