President John Dramani Mahama announced plans for a new road toll system. This system will be modernized and digitized. It is part of the government’s 2025 Economic Policy and Budget Statement. The goal is to improve revenue collection and streamline toll operations.
Speaking at the 2025 Ghana CEOs’ Summit in Accra, President Mahama explained the details. The new system will eliminate traditional toll booths. It will use digital technology and integrate with the Ghana Card.
Every vehicle will be linked to its owner’s Ghana Card. As vehicles pass through toll points, cameras will capture their license plates. Owners will receive an instant bill of GH¢1.00. This amount will be deducted from their mobile money wallet or bank account.
“We don’t need old toll booths with attendants,” President Mahama said. “If you cross a toll point, your car's picture will be taken.” A GH¢1.00 bill will then go directly to your mobile money or bank account.
This initiative aims to modernize revenue collection and enhance road funding efficiency. The CEOs’ Summit focused on transforming business and governance for a sustainable economy. It brought together business leaders, policymakers, and economic stakeholders for strategic discussions.
President Mahama praised the Summit as vital for shaping Ghana’s economic future. He commended it for promoting collaboration between public and private sectors.
Ernest De-Graft Egyir, founder of the Summit, highlighted its importance in influencing policy changes. He stressed the need for innovation and partnership to build a resilient economy.
