Private schools welcome gov't's inclusion in Free SHS programme — President

The President of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools (GNAPS), Prof Tuurosong Damasus, praised the government. He welcomed the decision to extend the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme to private schools.

Prof Damasus called this move a timely intervention. It will help reduce congestion in public schools. It will also expand access to quality education across Ghana.

He noted that private schools have long sought inclusion in this programme. This is especially important due to overcrowding in public SHSs. The overcrowding led to the introduction of the double-track system.

“The National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has listened to our plea,” he said. Now, private schools can enroll more students under this initiative. He believes this will significantly boost the private education sector.

However, he stressed the need for timely fund releases from the government. This support is crucial for private schools to operate smoothly and fulfill their mission.

“Private schools are ready to provide quality education,” he added. The inclusion of private SHSs is expected to improve access to secondary education. It will also lessen financial burdens on parents.

In conclusion, Prof Damasus expressed optimism about this development. He believes it will enhance access to quality education and support private institutions in Ghana. He shared these thoughts during an interview on Fabea FM on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
