Civil Society Organisations SEND Ghana and the Ghana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (GAND) are pushing for mandatory front-of-package warning labels on food products. They believe this is essential for public health. It will also help consumers make informed dietary choices.
This renewed call was made during the launch of an advocacy campaign. Harriet Nuamah-Agyemang, Country Director of SEND Ghana, highlighted the need for clear warnings on food packaging. She stated that these labels will guide consumers toward healthier decisions.
“This campaign empowers people to make informed choices,” she said. It also addresses the rising burden of diet-related diseases in Ghana.
SEND Ghana aims to align its advocacy with national development plans. They are working to influence the upcoming Medium-Term Development Plan (2026–2030). Their goal is to include food labeling reforms in public health and nutrition policies.
The campaign responds to concerns about increasing obesity and non-communicable diseases in Ghana. It seeks to encourage government action on consumer protection and preventive health measures.
