Strengthening public health policies: WHO workshop urges action against alcohol industry interference

The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized the need to protect public health policy from alcohol industry interference.

This message was shared during the SAFER Inter-Country Learning Workshop in Accra, Ghana. Key stakeholders from 15 African countries attended to discuss alcohol control and road safety.

Dr. Frank Lule, WHO Representative of Ghana, stressed the importance of a strong monitoring system. This system would ensure accountability in implementing the SAFER Initiative.

The SAFER Initiative aims to reduce harmful alcohol consumption and improve road safety across Africa. It was developed with support from the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS).

Although alcohol consumption rates in Africa are lower than the global average, drinkers consume 25% more per person than worldwide estimates. This highlights an urgent need for comprehensive policies regulating alcohol availability and addressing drink-driving.

Dr. Lule stated that public health must come before the interests of the alcohol industry. He called for transparent policymaking that prioritizes community health.

He also urged Member States to work together on regulations that discourage harmful drinking behaviors. A strong monitoring system is crucial for tracking progress and ensuring effective implementation of SAFER initiatives.

This system will help hold stakeholders accountable and measure the impact on reducing alcohol-related harm and improving road safety.

As participants discuss policy development and best practices, their main goal is clear: create healthier environments free from alcohol industry influence while promoting safer roads throughout Africa.
