Three people were shot dead, and five others were injured. This happened during a police operation at the Newmont Ahafo South mines. The site is near Acherensua in the Ahafo Region.
The victims were part of a group of eight. They allegedly entered the mining area for illegal mining, known as galamsey. The incident occurred around 7:00 PM on Wednesday.
The group tried to flee after seeing police officers. Eyewitnesses say police chased them and fired indiscriminately. This led to the deaths and injuries.
The deceased have been taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital mortuary. The injured are receiving medical care at the same hospital.
In response, youth from Acherensua have protested. They blocked major roads and demanded justice for the victims. Protesters claim police used excessive force during the operation.
They are calling for an investigation into what happened. Tensions remain high as community members await a response from authorities.
Efforts to contact the Ahafo Regional Police Command have been unsuccessful so far. Local leaders are urging calm while they engage with authorities about the situation.
