W/R: Police arrest 11 for illegal mining and river pollution in Tarkwa-Nsuaem

The Western Central Police Command has arrested 11 people. This includes four Chinese nationals and seven Ghanaians. They were caught in a crackdown on illegal mining in Tarkwa-Nsuaem, Western Region.

The suspects polluted River Bonsa, an important water source for the area. Their illegal mining operations led to these arrests. Police intelligence played a key role in this operation.

These illegal activities have harmed the community significantly. The Ghana Water Company had to shut down the Bonsa water treatment plant. This closure caused a serious water shortage in Tarkwa-Nsuaem and nearby areas.

River Bonsa is the main source of drinking water for residents. ACP Bismark Agyapong addressed the media at the Western Central Headquarters in Tarkwa. He reaffirmed the police's commitment to protecting water bodies from pollution.

He urged the public to report any galamsey activities they see. Protecting the environment is everyone's responsibility, he emphasized. “The police are determined to protect our water bodies from destruction,” ACP Agyapong stated.

Illegal small-scale gold mining, known as galamsey, remains a major issue in Ghana. It causes environmental damage and severe water pollution. Authorities are working hard to combat this problem and restore water resources.

The arrested individuals are currently in police custody. They will face legal charges related to illegal mining and environmental pollution.
