'Mental health is the foundation of all health' – Jahara Osman rallies nation ahead of major forum

Mental health advocate Jahara Osman is urging Ghanaians to prioritize their mental wellbeing. She will host a major forum in Accra on Saturday, May 31, 2025.

The event is called 'The Mental Health Forum.' It aims to unite policymakers, health professionals, faith leaders, and citizens. They will address Ghana’s growing mental health crisis. Jahara believes this topic has been silenced in homes, workplaces, and churches.

Jahara emphasizes that mental health is the foundation of overall health. "If you're not mentally stable, you can get sick," she said. She encourages everyone to stabilize their mental functions to reduce various diseases.

The forum will include panel discussions and personal testimonies. Participants will learn about mental illness and stigma while gaining tools for healing. Experts like psychiatrists and trauma counselors will share insights on disorders such as depression and ADHD.

Jahara understands these challenges personally. She grew up undiagnosed with ADHD and later learned she is on the autism spectrum. Her struggles inspired her to help others facing similar issues.

She wants to educate parents about understanding behaviors related to autism and other conditions. "You know your child better than any doctor," she stated. Identifying these behaviors can make life easier for children.

Through her center and the forum, Jahara aims to equip communities with essential tools. The event will cover topics from neurodivergence in children to adult stress and trauma. It will also launch a national outreach campaign targeting churches, schools, and workplaces.

In many households, mental health remains a taboo subject. Jahara seeks to change this narrative by promoting empathy over judgment.

Starting in June until next April, they plan outreach programs across Ghana's regions. They invite churches or workplaces needing support on mental health issues to reach out.

The outreach campaign includes church support groups and school awareness programs. They are also establishing a toll-free hotline for emotional distress support.

With backing from the Ministry of Health and other partners, the forum is free for the public. It will take place at the Accra International Conference Centre and be broadcast live on JoyNews at noon.

Experts agree that Ghana needs ongoing discussions about mental wellness. Many Ghanaians suffer silently due to stigma or fear of seeking help from professionals.
