Ghana records 50 new HIV infections and 34 AIDS-related deaths daily, according to the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC).

At the 2024 World AIDS Day durbar in Accra, GAC Director-General Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene emphasized that these deaths and infections could be avoided if persons living with HIV (PLHIV) were diagnosed early and adhered to treatment.

The event, themed “Ending AIDS Together: Stepping Up HIV Prevention Efforts,” highlighted the economic toll of HIV, with untreated PLHIV losing an estimated five productive days monthly.

Dr. Atuahene urged investments in HIV prevention and treatment as critical to economic growth.

UNAIDS Country Director Hector Sucilla Perez called for removing barriers like stigma and discriminatory laws, while advocating for girls' education as a key HIV prevention strategy.

The event included HIV testing, medical screenings, and community engagement.
