The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) is frustrated. They are upset about delays from the Ministries of Health and Finance. The association plans to strike if no urgent action is taken.
In an interview on Citi Eyewitness News, GRNMA President Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo spoke out. She accused the government of delaying revised Conditions of Service for members. Despite months of follow-ups, there has been little progress.
“We cannot be following up for five months with no results,” she said. Officials give inconsistent responses, making it hard to maintain credibility with members.
“Our members are tired of excuses,” she added. “It’s been excuse after excuse from employers.” Nurses and midwives are also fed up with the excuses given to them.
Ofori-Ampofo outlined a plan for industrial action if issues remain unresolved. The association has been patient despite growing pressure from its members.
“On June 2nd and 3rd, we will wear red arm and headbands,” she said. “From June 4th to 8th, we will withdraw OPD services.” After that, all services will be withdrawn starting June 9th.
She hopes the ministry acts before June 4th. “They must do what is needed,” she stated.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health urged GRNMA to cancel its strike plans. They cited ongoing discussions and risks to patient care in their statement on May 28th. The Ministry asked the association to prioritize patients and return to negotiations for the health sector's benefit.
