Abuakwa South MP champions STEM with Maths and Science Quiz for basic schools

Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, the MP for Abuakwa South, is enhancing education. His initiative focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

The annual Kingsley Maths and Science Quiz is a key part of this effort. It gathers all Junior High Schools (JHS) in the constituency for competition. Now in its sixth year, it benefits thousands of pupils from 78 JHS and 92 primary schools.

The quiz has improved learning outcomes in Maths, Science, and spelling. Comfort Ofori Appiah, the Municipal Director of Education, praised the initiative's impact. She noted that it directly affects Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results.

In 2024, top performers were contestants from the quiz. They consistently excelled in previous years as well. This shows a clear link between the quizzes and better learning outcomes.

Madam Ofori Appiah highlighted schools like Asiakwa R/C Primary School as rising champions. These schools had not performed well before but are now excelling. This indicates that the initiative reaches grassroots levels effectively.

Some early participants have advanced to represent their schools nationally. Their success has even led to admissions at top U.S. universities like Memphis University.

Dr. Agyemang believes STEM education is crucial for Ghana's future. He stated that students need more than just classroom tuition to succeed in this field.

Through this competition, students deepen their understanding of core concepts in maths and science. Dr. Agyemang aims to empower young learners to compete confidently with peers globally.

He has funded the competition alongside the Abuakwa South Municipal Education Office for sustainability. He also provides essential learning materials for participating schools.

This year's competition concluded successfully with Asiakwa R/C Primary School winning the Spelling Challenge and Apedwa Presby JHS winning the Maths and Science Quiz.

At the closing ceremony, Dr. Agyemang commended finalists for their achievements and spirit of excellence.

One contestant shared how her confidence grew through participation in the quiz. She expressed gratitude towards Dr. Agyemang for starting this initiative.

A parent noted significant changes in her son's appreciation of school subjects since joining the quiz program.

Madam Ofori Appiah encouraged other organizations to support this initiative further so more children can benefit from it.

Looking ahead, Dr. Agyemang plans more educational interventions to boost literacy across Abuakwa South. He also aims to collaborate with international investors to establish Africa’s largest movie studio and AI center there.

Through these efforts, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang hopes to nurture future thinkers and leaders for a brighter tomorrow.
