Businessman Alhaji Seidu Agongo has donated GH₵500,000 to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund. This donation supports Ghanaians facing life-threatening kidney disease and high dialysis costs.
Agongo made this pledge during the launch of the fund under President John Dramani Mahama. His contribution is crucial for many battling kidney failure. Dialysis can cost up to GH₵8,400 per month, leaving patients with few options.
"I see their faces every day," Agongo said. "Mothers sell everything for treatment. Fathers choose between feeding children or staying alive." He believes no Ghanaian should face such choices.
Agongo owns a dialysis center and previously founded Heritage Bank. He understands the physical and financial toll of kidney disease. Speaking to health officials and journalists, he stressed the need for affordable healthcare.
"That's nearly 20 times the minimum wage," he noted about dialysis costs. "How can we expect our people to bear this?"
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as "Mahama Cares," aims to help vulnerable groups. Agongo’s donation will provide relief to hundreds or thousands needing dialysis and other treatments.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh praised Agongo's gesture as an example of patriotism. “This is not just corporate social responsibility,” he said. “It’s a Ghanaian standing for fellow Ghanaians.”
Agongo also owns Agricult, a company focused on agricultural development. He believes in shared prosperity and that healthcare should be a right for all.
"My business thrives in a healthy society," he stated. He urged others to contribute in any way they can: “It’s about caring deeply.”
Alhaji Agongo's previous philanthropic efforts include building a new block for the Child Emergency Unit at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.
