Dr. Eric Nkansah, a former Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), has responded to claims made by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu. The Minister alleged that 39,000 appointment letters were issued in 2024 without financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance.
Dr. Nkansah called this allegation “inaccurate and misleading.” He insisted that all teacher recruitments in 2024 had proper financial approvals.
On May 10, 2024, the Ministry of Finance approved recruitment for 16,500 graduate teachers from Colleges of Education. Then, on July 26, 2024, they granted clearance for an additional 2,000 graduate teachers.
“This brought the total financial clearance to 18,500,” Dr. Nkansah explained. On October 10, 2024, the Ministry approved an amendment allowing GES to use some slots for diploma teachers instead.
He emphasized that every teacher recruited in 2024 was accounted for under this clearance. “It is inaccurate and misleading to assert that appointment letters were issued without financial clearance,” he stated. “Every teacher recruited in 2024 had valid approval from the Ministry of Finance.”
