The Ashanti Regional Directorate of the Ghana Health Service has launched a three-year campaign to combat liver and prostate cancers, which are the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among men.
Cancer cases in the region surged from 8,764 in 2022 to 11,783 in 2024, with prostate cancer alone accounting for 3,200 new cases over the past three years.
Alarmingly, nine out of ten men diagnosed with liver cancer do not survive, according to Ashanti Regional Health Director, Dr. Fred Adomako Boateng.
The campaign, aligned with the World Cancer Day theme “United by Unique”, will focus on awareness creation, early detection, behavioral change initiatives, and equitable patient support systems.
Men in Kumasi have welcomed the initiative, emphasizing the need for screenings at accessible locations such as fitting shops, wood villages, and transport stations to encourage participation.
