Bawku Nursing college to reopen after months of closure

Students at the Presbyterian Nursing Training College in Bawku are hopeful. The college has been closed since November 21, 2024, due to security issues.

Rev. James K. Awuni, the Upper Presbyterian Board Chairman, spoke to Citi News on April 8, 2025. He confirmed that the situation is now with the Upper East Regional Minister and the Regional Police Commander. They are expected to make a decision soon.

Rev. Awuni stressed that reopening the college is urgent due to security concerns. This announcement follows a peaceful protest by students on April 7, 2025. Students marched in Bawku to demand the school's reopening.

They expressed that the long closure has harmed their academic progress and mental health. In response, Rev. Awuni said the Board asked the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) for an assessment of the situation.

He explained that they applied to open the school but faced current tensions in Bawku. The regional minister will discuss this with the police commander soon. Rev. Awuni is optimistic about receiving a favorable response shortly regarding their next steps.
