The Twifo Atti-Morkwa District Hospital in the Central Region is facing a crisis. It struggles to provide essential healthcare services due to a severe shortage of permanent medical staff.
Since opening in November 2020, the 160-bed facility has not had enough personnel. It serves over 30,000 residents but lacks the staff it needs. Dr. Peter Tetteh, the hospital’s administrator, described the daily challenges faced by the team.
He stated, “The financial burden of hiring temporary staff is unsustainable.” This situation poses significant risks to providing timely and effective care.
The hospital is a major referral point for nearby communities. However, it still awaits permanent doctors, nurses, and key technical staff from the government. Dr. Tetteh emphasized the need for paramedical staff and specialists.
He also highlighted the lack of critical infrastructure like staff accommodation and service vehicles. During a recent visit, Hon. Isaac Yawson, the new District Chief Executive, recognized how serious this issue is.
He said, “We are not going to sit and watch the hospital collapse.” He promised to explore alternatives and engage with the Health Ministry for a permanent solution.
Hon. Hakim Addae from the Central Regional Council of State was present during this visit. He vowed to discuss these issues directly with the Minister of Health. “The people of Twifo Atti-Morkwa deserve better,” he stated firmly.
