Ghana is currently grappling with a cholera outbreak that has claimed the lives of 21 individuals across four regions. As the nation confronts this health crisis, authorities in the Upper East Region are intensifying efforts to curb the spread of the disease, particularly during the festive season, when gatherings and food consumption are heightened.
Speaking on A1 Radio, Francisca Adongo, the Bolgatanga Municipal Health Promotion Officer, urged the public to remain vigilant about the factors contributing to the spread of cholera. She emphasized that interactions with others, the cleanliness of the environment, and the safety of food sources are critical in preventing the disease’s transmission.
With the holiday season underway, Madam Adongo stressed the need for extra caution, as cholera can escalate rapidly. She warned that the disease could be fatal if not treated promptly, with many patients reaching critical stages before seeking medical care. To mitigate this risk, she advised individuals to replenish fluids immediately upon noticing symptoms and to seek medical attention without delay, especially in severe cases requiring intravenous fluids.
Madam Adongo also shared practical tips to help prevent the spread of cholera. She recommended covering food to keep flies away, consuming food while it is still warm, and practicing thorough handwashing after using the washroom. Additionally, she advised the public to wash fruits with saltwater followed by clean water before consumption to reduce the risk of contamination.
