The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has expressed concern over widespread disregard for regulations prohibiting smoking in public spaces, as outlined in the Public Health Act 2012 and Tobacco Regulations 2016.
Despite these laws, many tobacco users continue to smoke in public areas, putting both smokers and non-smokers at risk of second-hand smoke exposure.
Dr. Abigail Arthur of the FDA emphasized the importance of designated smoking areas, far from vulnerable groups like children and expectant mothers.
Public venues are also required to display ‘No Smoking’ signs.
The FDA warned that non-compliance could result in fines, imprisonment, or prosecution, and urged heightened vigilance during the festive season to curb illegal tobacco products.
