The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) organized a stakeholder engagement in Koforidua as part of the Tobacco Policy Action Fund for Africa (TOPAFA) project, aimed at raising awareness about tobacco control measures.
The event gathered hotel managers, restaurant operators, and entertainment service providers to discuss the dangers of tobacco use.
Ms. Anita Owusu Kuffour, Eastern Regional Director of the FDA, emphasized the health risks of tobacco, highlighting the need for stricter control, especially in public places.
She urged compliance with the Public Health Act of 2012, prohibiting smoking in non-designated areas.
The FDA also warned of legal consequences for failing to follow tobacco sale regulations.
Statistics show over 6,700 annual tobacco-related deaths in Ghana, with a significant portion affecting those under 70.
