The Ghana HIV and AIDS Network (GHANET) has urged the government to activate the National HIV/AIDS Fund. This fund aims to support children born with HIV.
GHANET noted that while treatment and prevention have improved, public education has declined. This decline has led to increased stigma, misinformation, and risky behavior. According to the Ghana Health Service, over 34,000 new HIV infections were recorded from January to September 2024.
Ernest Amoabeng Ortsin, President of GHANET, spoke to Citi News about the need for awareness campaigns. He said, “We have been advocating for the HIV and AIDS Fund for some time now.”
He explained that a law exists to support this fund. A Legislative Instrument is ready to establish it. However, he believes there is government inertia in operationalizing the fund.
Ortsin emphasized the importance of impressing upon the government to activate this fund. He stated that resources are needed to help young people in these situations.
