The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) is concerned about misuse of honorary titles. These include "Doctor" and "Professor." GTEC warns individuals and institutions to stop using these titles improperly.
In a press statement, Professor Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai signed on behalf of GTEC. He noted that many people use honorary titles as if they are earned qualifications. This practice is misleading and unethical, according to the Commission.
GTEC stated that it violates the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023). The Commission supports recognizing distinguished individuals but insists that only accredited institutions should confer such honors.
Honorary degrees recognize exceptional achievements but should not be used in formal credentials. Using these titles illegally undermines the integrity of Ghana's academic system.
GTEC's mandate includes regulating academic titles under Section 8 (3)(d) of Act 1023. This covers terms like “university,” “college,” “Emeritus,” “Professor,” “Doctor,” and “Chartered.”
The Commission urges the public and educational institutions to maintain ethical standards. Individuals must take responsibility and exercise restraint regarding title usage.
To protect Ghana’s higher education system, GTEC demands an end to misuse of honorary titles. Institutions and individuals who ignore these guidelines may face regulatory sanctions.
