Glaucoma Laser treatment launched at St. Thomas Eye Hospital

St. Thomas Eye Hospital has launched a new laser machine to fight glaucoma. This condition is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in Ghana. The Twin STAR SLT/YAG combo laser machine aims to improve glaucoma care across the country.

Dr. Dziffa-Bella Imelda Ofori-Adjei, President of the Ophthalmology Society of Ghana, praised this initiative. She called it a “landmark investment in the future of glaucoma care.” At the launch in Accra, she highlighted that this machine symbolizes commitment and responsibility.

“Glaucoma is a silent thief of sight,” she stated. Up to 8% of Ghanaians over 40 may have it without knowing. Early detection and timely treatment are crucial for preventing vision loss.

The Twin STAR machine combines two important treatments: Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) and YAG laser. SLT is a safe, non-invasive first-line treatment that lowers eye pressure. The YAG function improves surgical options for certain eye conditions.

“This machine enhances our ability to detect and manage glaucoma,” Dr. Ofori-Adjei said. She emphasized that investing in people is just as important as technology.

Dr. Michael Ekuoba Gyasi, Executive Director of St. Thomas Eye Hospital, expressed pride in their leadership role in eye care. He noted that this advancement benefits not just Accra but all of Ghana.

The event was both celebratory and a call to action. Dr. Ofori-Adjei urged public and private institutions to join forces against glaucoma.

“The fight against avoidable blindness needs everyone’s effort,” she said, including clinicians, policymakers, and communities.

As Ghana faces rising rates of age-related eye diseases, technologies like Twin STAR are vital for preserving sight and improving lives.
