Half-a-million Ghanaians living with HIV – Ghana AIDS Commission urges safe practices

The Ghana AIDS Commission reports that over 500,000 people in Ghana live with HIV/AIDS. This highlights the ongoing challenge of fighting the disease.

The national HIV prevalence rate is about 1.7%. There are regional differences in these rates. The Eastern Region has the highest rates, while northern areas have the lowest.

Dr. Prosper Kharmacelle Akanbong, Assistant Director of the Commission, spoke to Adom News. He urged attendees at this year’s Kwahu Easter festivities to practice safe sex. Using condoms can help prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

“There are enough condoms available for free during the celebrations,” Dr. Akanbong said. He encouraged everyone to take advantage of this resource.

He noted that rising HIV cases are linked to drug abuse and illegal mining. Dr. Akanbong advised young people to avoid these high-risk behaviors for their health and future.

He emphasized that public education and responsible behavior are vital in reducing HIV spread in Ghana. Access to preventive tools is also crucial for effective prevention efforts.
