Hypertension cases in Western Region increases

Dr. Gifty Amugi is the Acting Western Regional Director of Ghana Health Service (GHS). She announced an increase in hypertension cases in the region. The rate rose from 2.96% in 2023 to 3.11% by the end of 2024.

These figures come from clients who checked their blood pressure at health facilities. Many people may still be unaware of their blood pressure status. Dr. Amugi warned that this is dangerous, as hypertension can lead to serious complications.

She spoke during World Hypertension Day celebrations in Takoradi. The theme for this year was: “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control it, Live Longer.”

The region aims to screen 66,000 individuals for early detection and management of hypertension. So far, healthcare workers have screened over 8,000 people. They plan to visit schools, markets, and other public places to reach their goal.

Dr. Amugi emphasized the importance of checking blood pressure regularly. She highlighted the risks associated with unmanaged hypertension.

Mr. Joseph Nelson is the Western Regional Minister. He praised the GHS Directorate and healthcare professionals for their efforts in health education.

He urged stakeholders to collaborate on screening 66,000 people in the region. By participating in screenings, they can identify those at risk and provide support.

He also encouraged citizens to join awareness campaigns and adopt healthy lifestyles.
