Dr. Thomas Agyarko-Poku is the Medical Superintendent of Suntreso Government Hospital. He has called for urgent improvements to the hospital's infrastructure. This is necessary to enhance healthcare delivery.
Despite many challenges, he remains committed to improving services. A major issue is the lack of space in several departments. The emergency unit, outpatient department (OPD), children’s block, and eye clinic are all affected. The eye clinic currently operates from a makeshift structure.
In an interview with Channel One News, Dr. Agyarko-Poku highlighted the OPD's limitations. "We have just four consulting rooms," he said. "Sometimes we adjust and have two doctors in one room." He also mentioned that there is limited space for Ear, Nose and Throat and dental services.
The Mother and Baby Unit faces similar issues. Vera Owusu, Deputy Head of the unit, stated they need more logistics and monitors. Suntreso Government Hospital serves many communities in Kumasi and beyond. It is a preferred choice for patients who want to avoid long waits at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
As one of the oldest public health facilities in the region, Suntreso plays a vital role in healthcare delivery. However, increasing patient numbers strain its capacity significantly. The hospital compound's poor condition affects patients as well—dusty during dry seasons and muddy when it rains.
Seasonal rains have damaged key buildings at the hospital too. This further disrupts operations and impacts patient care.
