The Trauma and Orthopaedics Directorate of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has launched Orthopaedics Month. This initiative aims to raise awareness about bone health. It also offers free orthopaedic surgeries for patients in need.
The campaign runs throughout June 2025. Its theme is “Strong Bones, Active Lives – Celebrating Orthopaedic Health.” The focus is on public education, injury prevention, and fundraising. Funds will support underprivileged patients needing critical orthopaedic care.
A key part of the campaign is a fundraising drive. This drive will sponsor surgical procedures for those who cannot afford treatment. Essential operations include fracture repairs, joint reconstructions, and corrective surgeries.
At the launch, Dr. Abeiku Hammond spoke about the urgent need for financial support. He said many patients delay care due to costs. “This month is not only about awareness but also action,” he stated. The goal is to provide free surgeries and help patients live active, pain-free lives.
Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo also highlighted the need for accessible services. He noted that financial hardship often leads patients to postpone necessary treatment, worsening their conditions.
“As part of our corporate social responsibility, we offer free services,” he explained. However, this relies on sponsorship from individuals and organizations.
The Directorate has planned community engagement activities across the Ashanti Region. These include free orthopaedic screenings and educational outreach in schools and communities. Media campaigns will spread awareness about bone health as well.
KATH calls on individuals, corporate organizations, and charitable foundations to contribute to this cause. Donations will directly fund surgeries and outreach efforts, helping restore mobility and dignity to many patients.
