The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) is doubling its dialysis machines from seven to 14, thanks to partnerships and Internally Generated Funds (IGF).
The hospital recently received two machines from the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL), with six more, worth GH¢2.8 million, expected by the end of November.
KATH CEO Prof. Otchere Addai-Mensah revealed the expansion aligns with rising demand, as monthly dialysis sessions have surged from 80 to 300. He credited the government’s free dialysis care under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) for enhancing renal patient care.
Previously, KATH operated with only two functional machines, forcing patients to seek private care.
NHIS CEO Dr. Dacosta Aboagye confirmed plans to procure additional machines nationwide to meet the growing demand for dialysis services.
