NLC declares midwives and nurses' strike illegal, orders them to call it off

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has declared the strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives’ Association (GRNMA) illegal. This decision follows the association's failure to meet procedural requirements under the Labour Act.

The ongoing strike is affecting healthcare delivery across Ghana. Many public hospitals are experiencing disruptions, leaving patients stranded. Nurses have abandoned their posts, worsening the situation.

In response, the Ministry of Health has issued emergency directives. These aim to maintain essential healthcare services during the strike.

The NLC received a Notice of Industrial Action from GRNMA on May 29, 2025. Acting under Section 162 of the Labour Act, they summoned GRNMA for a hearing on June 4, 2025.

The nurses were instructed to stop all planned actions. This included wearing red bands and withdrawing services until further notice from the Commission.

While representatives from various ministries attended the meeting, GRNMA did not show up. They continued with their industrial action despite being summoned.

The NLC noted that GRNMA did not follow Section 159 of the Labour Act. This section outlines proper notice requirements for strikes.

As a result, the industrial action has been declared illegal. The NLC has ordered GRNMA to call off the strike immediately.

The leadership of GRNMA is encouraged to engage with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission. They must discuss implementing their Collective Agreement and report back by June 25, 2025, at 2:30 pm.

The Commission stressed that following legal processes is crucial for maintaining industrial harmony in healthcare services provided by nurses and midwives.
