Priscillia Akosua Danso, a nurse at Ga East Municipal Hospital, is advocating for higher salaries for nurses. She believes better pay is essential to reflect their important role in healthcare.
Mrs. Danso shared her concerns during a discussion on Joy Prime’s Morning Show. This event was held to celebrate May Day 2025. She stated, “I think there should be a salary increment.” She emphasized that current pay is inadequate.
She highlighted the financial challenges faced by healthcare professionals. Essential expenses like transportation and utilities take up much of their salaries. This leaves them with little money to live on.
Mrs. Danso proposed improved incentive packages for nurses and midwives. She suggested support for accommodation and access to loans to enhance their quality of life.
“They should provide accommodation for nurses,” she said. She recommended subsidized or free housing options, or gradual salary deductions for housing costs.
Additionally, Mrs. Danso called for free healthcare services for nurses. She questioned why health professionals must pay for services at their own workplaces.
While some institutions partially cover medical bills, she noted this is not common practice. She urged that such benefits should be standardized across the healthcare sector.
She believes these changes would boost morale among healthcare workers. “Something must be done about the salary,” she appealed, hoping it would lead to greater commitment and satisfaction in their work.
Furthermore, Mrs. Danso urged the government to improve recruitment efforts in health facilities nationwide. The high patient-to-staff ratio puts excessive strain on existing personnel.
