Nurses, Midwives press gov't to implement negotiated service conditions

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has urged the government to implement agreed service conditions.

This appeal was made during the 2025 International Day of Midwives Symposium. The event took place in the Ashanti Region. The theme was "Midwives: Critical in Every Crisis."

The GRNMA is concerned that these service conditions have not been put into action.

Jones Afriyie-Anto, the Ashanti Regional Chairman, emphasized the need for enforcement. He said this would motivate midwives currently working in hospitals.

He noted that limited job opportunities and poor conditions push many trained midwives abroad.

Mr. Afriyie-Anto also highlighted issues faced by midwifery trainees. Many who finished training in 2021 are still without jobs.

“These are numbers the government could employ to boost the workforce,” he stated. He added that many midwives have left due to poor conditions.

He warned that losing skilled personnel increases pressure on remaining healthcare workers. This situation negatively impacts patient care.

Joyce Gifty-Otchere, Principal of Kokofu Nursing Training College, also spoke at the event. She pointed out a critical shortage of laboratory equipment and training materials.

She called on the government to invest in nursing and midwifery institutions. This includes providing essential resources and improving accommodation for staff and students.

“The government should help us obtain proper mannequins and well-equipped laboratories,” she said. “This would give students practical experience and better prepare them for their careers.”
