The SM Cares Foundation has launched a new initiative. This program aims to improve healthcare access for children in Ghana. It targets children aged three months to seventeen years. The goal is to enroll them in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
The outreach event took place on April 17, 2025. Hundreds of children were registered for the NHIS during this event. The Foundation focuses on supporting underprivileged communities.
Sarah Mensah, CEO of SM Cares Foundation, spoke at the event. She highlighted how important healthcare is for children's development. In addition to NHIS registration, ten children will join educational and vocational training programs.
“April 17 is my birthday,” she said. “I decided to register children onto the NHIS today.” She also mentioned food donations for street children near the 37 Military Hospital.
Francis Oti Frempong is the Director of Membership and Regional Operations at NHIA. He praised the Foundation's efforts in improving health insurance access. He noted that this has helped reduce Ghana’s child mortality rate.
However, he acknowledged that many rural families still struggle with costs. “This initiative addresses infant mortality challenges,” he stated.
For beneficiaries like Nancy Oguzie, this initiative brings hope. With her new NHIS card, she feels secure about accessing healthcare without extra costs. “It will help me because hospital services are now affordable,” Nancy said.
The SM Cares Foundation emphasizes that healthcare access is a right for all children. They continue to promote community-based interventions so no child is left behind.
