Doctors at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) ended their strike after two days. This followed intervention by Yaa Naa Abukari II, the Overlord of Dagbon.
A delegation led by Zangbalun Naa Dr. Yakubu II met with hospital management and doctors on April 25. After this meeting, emergency services resumed at the hospital, which serves northern Ghana.
However, doctors still want an apology from Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. They will not fully resume work until they receive it.
Zangbalun Naa Dr. Yakubu II acted as a neutral facilitator during discussions. He promised to convey the doctors' concerns to the minister and urged them to continue emergency services.
Dr. Salifu Alhassan Tiah, Director of Pharmacy at TTH, appealed to his colleagues for respect towards the delegation. He emphasized that they should consider the traditional leader's intervention seriously.
The doctors went on strike due to a hostile working environment and lack of supplies. They also felt insulted by senior government officials.
The strike began after Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh dismissed TTH’s CEO, Dr. Adam Atiku. The dismissal was linked to alleged mismanagement and negligence leading to a patient's death.
The minister visited TTH to assess its condition and gather information about this incident. The deceased patient, Bavug Salim, was left unattended in the Emergency Ward for hours before dying.
During his visit, Dr. Valentine Akwulpwa tried explaining what happened but did not satisfy the minister's concerns. The minister expressed dissatisfaction with both resource management and overall hospital conditions before dismissing the CEO.
