Butt Lift Risks
Eight women were hospitalized after a dangerous cosmetic procedure. They developed paralysis from a bacterial infection linked to liquid BBLs. This procedure involves injecting fillers into the buttocks for volume. It is known to be unsafe, especially when done by unqualified practitioners.
Injecting dermal filler near blood vessels can block blood flow. This blockage can cause tissue death. Despite the risks, non-surgical BBLs are not illegal in the UK. Last year, Alice Webb became the first known UK victim to die from this procedure.
Reports indicate that these eight women received injections from an unlicensed practitioner in Paris. They suffered botulism after being injected with contaminated filler. Botulism is caused by toxins from Clostridium botulinum bacteria, which can come from unsanitary injections. If untreated, it can lead to paralysis.
Dr. Johnathan Cook, a Florida-based plastic surgeon, called these findings unsettling. He described these procedures as catastrophes and a curse for patients. Dr. Catherine Bergeret Galley presented these cases at a meeting in Austin, Texas. She emphasized that botulism should not occur from filler injections.
She warned against visiting unqualified practitioners and highlighted the dangers of poor-quality products. Unlike traditional BBLs that use fat transfer, liquid BBLs rely on fillers injected into the body. The filler used in this case was reportedly contaminated with harmful bacteria.
Dr. Galley noted that one patient nearly died within a week of treatment. Others remained in life-threatening conditions weeks later due to complications. She expressed concern over the rising demand for aesthetic treatments and its link to criminal activity.
Clostridium botulinum bacteria exist in soil and dust but can become dangerous under certain conditions. Symptoms of botulism include weakness and difficulty breathing or swallowing, potentially leading to paralysis or death if severe.
British experts have long warned about non-surgical aesthetic treatments performed by inexperienced practitioners. They have called for stricter regulations in the cosmetic industry as sales of fillers are unregulated in the UK.
In September 2022, Alice Webb died shortly after receiving a non-surgical butt lift believed to be performed in West Country England. Two individuals were arrested on suspicion of manslaughter related to her death.
At the annual meeting in Austin, doctors reported an increase in botched liquid BBL cases treated by NHS medics over the past year. Dr. Nora Nugent urged for a ban on unqualified individuals performing such procedures.
She stressed that these treatments require medical knowledge and understanding of potential complications—knowledge often lacking among non-medical practitioners.
Patients suffering complications may experience skin loss or infections due to improper filler injections without any central reporting system available for tracking such incidents.
