George Kwarteng Adenta, a member of the NPP Communications Team, criticized the new fuel levy. This levy is commonly called the “Dumsor Levy.” He warned it will raise living costs for ordinary Ghanaians.
In an interview on Adom TV, Kwarteng accused the NDC government of betrayal. He claimed they misled voters during the 2024 campaign. They promised to avoid heavy taxes but imposed a harsh fuel levy soon after taking office.
“This government lied to Ghanaians to win power,” Kwarteng stated. He noted that they promised not to tax citizens but are now introducing a burdensome levy affecting every household.
Kwarteng compared the Dumsor Levy to the E-Levy from former President Akufo-Addo's administration. The NDC opposed the E-Levy while in opposition. He explained that under the E-Levy, transferring GHC1,000 incurs a GHC10 tax. In contrast, buying GHC1,000 worth of fuel under Mahama’s Dumsor Levy means paying GHC83 in tax.
He argued that this new fuel levy will hit transport operators hard, especially Trotro drivers and low-income earners. These groups are already facing economic difficulties. Kwarteng described the tax as “insensitive and exploitative.”
He insisted it contradicts NDC's promises to help Ghanaians. “John Mahama and the NDC said they would alleviate suffering,” he added. “But this tax shows they do not care about living conditions in Ghana.”
