Henry Nana Boakye, the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called for early presidential primaries. He cited concerns about internal fatigue and declining enthusiasm among party members.
This announcement follows Kennedy Agyapong's withdrawal from the NPP’s “Thank You” tour. He cited security threats to his supporters as the reason for his decision.
A violent incident in Kumasi prompted this move. A student from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was stabbed during a gathering. The injured student was affiliated with Unity Hall’s Jama group and was hired by Agyapong’s team.
On JoyNews’ The Pulse Show, Mr. Boakye noted that some long-serving members are withdrawing from active participation. He emphasized the need for better management of internal affairs.
“We know a number of persons who are laying their boots,” he said. He believes early presidential primaries will help address these issues.
Mr. Boakye argued that prolonged internal electoral processes have caused divisions within the party. This has hurt momentum and unity before national contests.
“It looks like we spend too much time on internal elections,” he concluded.
