2024 elections: Hold presidential primary ahead of all elections-Kwabena Agyepong to NPP

Kwabena Agyei Agyepong is a former presidential candidate. He served as a senior advisor to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during the 2024 campaign.

He has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to focus on its presidential primaries first. This request was made in a memorandum dated April 17, 2025. The memo was sent to the NPP’s Constitution Amendment Committee, led by Frank Davies.

Mr. Agyepong proposed several constitutional reforms for fairness and cohesion within the party. He suggested removing Article 13(9) of the party’s constitution. This article currently uses a special electoral college to limit presidential aspirants to five.

He believes this process is undemocratic and can be manipulated. He stated that the special college has fewer than 1,000 members, which undermines fairness.

To improve decision-making, he proposed creating constituency caucuses in all 276 constituencies. These caucuses would include various local leaders and executives.

Mr. Agyepong described this initiative as "a limited enlargement of the electoral college." It aims to ensure broader consultation and representation in key decisions.

He also emphasized the need for a logical electoral sequence. He recommended holding presidential primaries before any other internal elections.

“This approach aligns with Article 13(1) of our current constitution,” he noted. It promotes a more logical and less contentious timeline for elections.

His suggestions come as the NPP prepares for internal restructuring ahead of the 2028 general elections.
