33 corruption cases uncovered by ORAL team ready for prosecution – Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama announced that the Attorney-General is building 33 corruption cases. These cases involve former government appointees, with some prosecutions already in progress.

During a meeting with the African Union Advisory Board Against Corruption, Mahama shared details about the government's anti-corruption efforts. He stated, “We set up the ORAL Committee, which identified 33 cases for the Attorney General.” Special investigative teams have been created to look into each case.

The President noted that investigations have revealed significant evidence of illegal property acquisitions. He said, “Some investigations found evidence of properties bought with illicit wealth.” Many cases are just starting prosecution, while others are already underway.

The Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) Team was formed after Mahama's 2024 election victory. This task force investigates alleged financial misconduct from the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration. Its focus includes embezzlement and misuse of public funds by officials.

ORAL operates independently but collaborates with security agencies and other offices. Its findings go to the Attorney-General for prosecution.

The formation of ORAL faced criticism from the opposition NPP. They accused Mahama’s government of conducting a politically motivated witch-hunt. Senior NPP members claimed the initiative lacked transparency and aimed to silence critics.

Some commentators labeled ORAL as “a tool for political retribution,” warning it could increase divisions and instability. Despite this backlash, President Mahama defended ORAL as essential for restoring accountability and public trust in governance. His administration insists that investigations are based on evidence, not political motives.
