‘Be honest if you have no solution to Bawku Conflict’ – Catholic Bishop tells politicians

The Catholic Bishop of the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Diocese, Most Reverend Alfred Agyenta, has a message for political leaders. He urges them to be honest with Ghanaians about the Bawku conflict. If they lack viable solutions, they should say so.

Most Reverend Agyenta believes transparency is crucial for lasting peace. The Bawku area suffers from deep ethnic tensions and violence. He spoke during a meeting with Upper East Regional Minister Donatus Akamugri Atanga about peace-building efforts.

The Bishop reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to fostering peace. He emphasized that the Catholic Church is ready to take a leading role in this process. However, he stressed the need for genuine collaboration from political leaders.

"We are not competing with the government," he said. "We aim to help people and transform their environment." He acknowledged their efforts but reiterated that if politics cannot provide solutions, politicians must be clear about it.

"If there is no solution from politicians, we need to know," he stated. "Then we can figure out how best to work together." Otherwise, he warned, progress will remain elusive.
