Former Attorney General Martin Amidu has accused Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo of emotional manipulation. He claims she is using political rhetoric to distract from constitutional petitions for her removal.
In an open letter, Amidu criticized parts of the Chief Justice’s supplementary affidavit. He called these aspects dishonest and inappropriate for her position.
Amidu specifically pointed to paragraph 12 of the affidavit. He argued it had no legal purpose and aimed to sway public emotions. This was meant to avoid addressing the complaints in the petitions.
He questioned her comments about being searched before hearings. He asked if petitioners, witnesses, and lawyers were also searched before entering.
Amidu also criticized paragraph 13 of the affidavit. He noted that the Chief Justice did not clarify that previous Article 146 proceedings were under her administration. “She conveniently omitted that all referenced proceedings were conducted by committees she appointed,” he stated.
He emphasized that the Constitution assigns responsibility for these petitions to the President.
Amidu's strongest criticism focused on paragraphs 14 and 15 of the affidavit. He described them as “childlike cries” appealing to emotions without supporting facts.
He called this a clear insult to citizens exercising their rights under Article 146.
Amidu expressed disbelief at the Chief Justice's claim that the proceedings are a mockery of justice.
He wrote that this statement resembles a political party playbook used since the petitions were submitted.
In conclusion, Amidu condemned the tone and content of the affidavit as disgraceful. He said it is shameful for a sitting Chief Justice to repeat such unproven political statements while being defended by a former Attorney General.
