Abolish community mining policy – Child Rights Int’l to govt

Child Rights International has urged the government to end the community mining policy. This call follows a new report on illegal mining's impact on children in Ghana.

The report is titled “The Hidden Toll of Illegal Mining on Children in Ghana.” It highlights severe consequences for children's health, education, and well-being.

Findings show that only 18% of children aged 13 to 14 stay in school. For those aged 15 to 17, the figure is just 17%. Many children leave school to work in dangerous conditions to support their families.

At a media briefing, Bright Kweku Appiah spoke as the Executive Director of Child Rights International. He called for better enforcement of child protection laws. He also emphasized the need for free, compulsory education in affected areas.

Appiah stated, “We must revise our approach to illegal mining issues.” He added that the government should abolish community mining programs. A comprehensive policy must address child protection concerns as well.
