Mary Awelana Addah, the Executive Director of Transparency International Ghana, has spoken out. She urged President John Dramani Mahama to act decisively regarding a cash donation controversy. This involves Sammy Gyamfi, the Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod). He donated money to Patricia Oduro Koranteng, known as Nana Agradaa.
A video on social media shows Gyamfi giving an undisclosed amount of money to Agradaa at a public event. This has sparked significant backlash from the public. Many Ghanaians are concerned about the appropriateness of this donation due to Agradaa’s controversial past.
In response to criticism, Gyamfi apologized publicly. He claimed that the donation was a private act and not meant for attention. However, Addah believes this incident highlights a need for stronger accountability for public officials.
On Channel One’s Newsroom with Charles Owusu-Kumi, she emphasized the importance of a Code of Conduct. "This is an opportunity for the President to show he means business," she said. She also called for passing the Conduct of Public Officers Bill to criminalize unethical behavior.
Addah noted that current codes lack punitive measures for such actions. She urged the President to issue a stern directive regarding asset declarations by public officials. "This shows commitment beyond just optics," she stated.
Sammy Gyamfi's apology over his dollar gift continues to draw attention in Ghana.
