Afenyo-Markin Alleges Mahama Plotting ‘Third Term’ Through Supreme Court Appointments

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has criticized President John Mahama. He opposes Mahama's nomination of seven Court of Appeal judges to the Supreme Court. Afenyo-Markin claims this move aims to strengthen political control over the judiciary. He calls it a “third-term agenda in disguise.”

At a press conference on May 1 in Accra, Afenyo-Markin spoke out against the nominations. He warned they are not routine appointments. Instead, he believes they are part of a plan to fill the Supreme Court with loyalists. These loyalists may protect the administration from future legal accountability.

The nominations come after President Mahama suspended the Chief Justice. This suspension has sparked nationwide political and legal debates. Afenyo-Markin sees both actions as signs of a deeper ambition. He described it as a dangerous political move.

He argued that these nominations could damage public trust in the judiciary. They may also weaken Ghana’s democratic institutions. “This is not how a responsible government strengthens the rule of law,” he stated. Instead, it shows how a government can tighten its grip on power.

Afenyo-Markin called for widespread opposition to this threat against judicial independence. He urged civil society, religious groups, and citizens to defend democratic norms. “We must not be silent,” he emphasized. “This is a national issue that transcends partisan lines.” The integrity of Ghana's justice system is at stake.
