Afenyo-Markin and NPP must apologise for altercation with police officer during protest -Gbande

Mustapha Gbande, Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), criticized Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. This criticism followed Afenyo-Markin's confrontation with a police officer during the #SaveTheJudiciary demonstration on May 5, 2025.

Gbande accused the Effutu MP of physically assaulting a police officer without provocation. He called for an apology from both Afenyo-Markin and the New Patriotic Party (NPP). "Afenyo-Markin slapped a police officer. The NPP should be ashamed," he stated.

He noted that past protests faced more restrictions than Monday’s demonstration. Gbande made these comments during an interview on Adom FM.

The controversy began with a viral video showing Afenyo-Markin lunging at a police officer during the protest. In response, Afenyo-Markin clarified his actions were due to unprovoked aggression from Constable Forson.

He claimed he was struck in the chest while approaching the barricade to submit a petition. Senior police officers and colleagues intervened to calm him down and provided water before he submitted his petition.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has invited Mr. Afenyo-Markin for questioning as part of their investigation into the incident. The MP has also filed a formal complaint against the officer involved and petitioned the Inspector General of Police for disciplinary action.
