Political Science Lecturer, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has linked recent unrest among some National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters over the nomination of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to widespread poverty.
According to him, the disappointment exhibited by aggrieved supporters stems from their expectations of financial support from preferred candidates who were not nominated.
Speaking to Citi News, Dr. Asah-Asante said many of the protesters are motivated by the hope of gaining economic favours through personal affiliations.
“Those who are opposing these individuals are looking forward to seeing a situation where their choices will be the occupant of those positions—so that they can access them and derive some favours. It dovetails into the issue of poverty,” he explained.
He described the conduct of those vandalising party offices in protest as unacceptable and called for law enforcement to step in.
“The government has the mandate to make appointments. The fact that someone is not your preferred candidate doesn’t give you the right to destroy property. Those involved must be arrested,” Dr. Asah-Asante added.
His remarks come amid rising tensions in parts of the country following the announcement of new MMDCE appointments by the Mahama administration.
